What Does a Volunteer Research Assistant Do?

Volunteer Research Assistants are academic student volunteers hired by principal researchers (also known as principal investigators (PI), or project directors) to assist in carrying out a particular research project. Research assistantships are intended to provide students the opportunity to learn proper research procedures and techniques.


Volunteer Research Assistant Responsibilities

Volunteer Research Assistants will be responsible for assisting the principal researcher (Sasha Reid, M.A.) in a variety of non-administrative tasks which may include:

  • Collecting data such as interviews, audio, and video files
  • Uploading files to website and website maintenance
  • Identifying and preparing resources for analysis
  • Coding qualitative data
  • Documenting results
  • Attending weekly meetings (via skype or in person)
  • File and maintainconfidential documents
  • Performing other related duties as required


Volunteer Research Assistant Requirements

Volunteers are expected to have the following skills:

  • Previous experience coding is an asset but not necessarily requited as training will be provided, regardless
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Strong organization skills
  • Ability to handle confidential information
  • Accuracy and Attention to Detail
  • Integrity
  • Strong time management skills
